What Is HYROX? A Beginner’s Guide to HYROX Training
If you’ve been around the fitness world lately, chances are you’ve heard the word HYROX. HYROX has quickly become one of the most popular fitness competitions for people who want to combine running, strength, and endurance into one challenge. But what exactly is HYROX, and do you need to be an elite athlete to do it? Here’s everything you need to know about HYROX training, the race itself, and how to get started.
What Is HYROX?
HYROX is a fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations. Every HYROX race follows the same basic format:
1 km Run
1 Functional Workout Station
Repeat that eight times for a total of 8 km of running and 8 workout stations.
The stations include:
- SkiErg
- Sled Push
- Sled Pull
- Burpee Broad Jumps
- Rowing
- Farmer’s Carry
- Sandbag Lunges
- Wall Balls
Because the race format is standardized, athletes can train specifically for the movements, distances, and demands they’ll face on race day.
Is HYROX Like CrossFit?
There is definitely some crossover between HYROX and functional fitness, but the training and competition styles are different.
HYROX places a much larger emphasis on running and muscular endurance. There are no Olympic lifts, gymnastics, or highly technical movements during the race. Instead, HYROX rewards your ability to maintain a sustainable pace, move efficiently, and keep working while fatigued. This makes HYROX approachable for a wide range of fitness levels, even if you’ve never competed in a fitness event before.
Do You Have to Be a Runner to Do HYROX?
No. But running is a major part of the race, which means improving your running should be an important part of your HYROX training program.
You don't need to be the fastest runner in the field. You need to develop enough aerobic fitness to maintain your pace while repeatedly transitioning between running and workout stations. Good HYROX training combines running, strength training, conditioning, and functional fitness rather than focusing on just one area.
What Does HYROX Training Look Like?
A well-rounded HYROX training program should prepare you for both the individual stations and the overall endurance demands of the race. Your training might include SkiErg and rowing intervals, sled work, lunges, carries, wall balls, running intervals, strength training, and longer aerobic conditioning sessions. Simply doing the HYROX movements isn't enough. Learning how to pace your runs, transition efficiently between stations, maintain good movement under fatigue, and build the strength to move the sleds effectively can make a huge difference on race day.
Who Is HYROX For?
One of the biggest reasons HYROX has grown so quickly is that there are options for different experience levels. You can compete individually, with a partner in HYROX Doubles, or as part of a relay team. That makes HYROX a great goal whether you're an experienced functional fitness athlete or simply looking for something new to train toward. You don't have to be signed up for a race to benefit from HYROX-style training. Combining strength, running, endurance, and functional movements is a great way to build well-rounded fitness for everyday life.
